We have a lot of assumptions. You might call these presuppositions that often make the foundation of our world view. The issue is that a lot of people have assumptions about themselves that aren’t true and are keeping them from putting their potential into practice and operating from their strengths.

Welcome to the I’m Josh Newton show where it is all about putting your potential into practice. Today I want to talk about assumptions.
This may seem like an odd thing to talk about on a podcast that’s about self-awareness and emotional intelligence but when most people think of assumptions they think about assumptions they have about other people or that other people have about them. I want to talk about assumptions that we have about ourselves.
These assumptions have just as much propensity and capability to be destructive but instead of to other people, they’re actually destructive to our own success.
The reason these assumptions can be so destructive to our success is because these assumptions start to make up a belief system that we have about ourselves. And that belief system we have about ourselves starts to affect the way we act in certain situations. It affects the way we compare ourselves to other people, and it can even affect us in a very tactical way with the types of jobs that we apply for, the types of projects that we volunteer for. So this really does have a major effect on our entire lives not just in our mental space or mental area but actually in the way we do things and the type of stuff that we actually go for it and we try to accomplish.
The hard thing about identifying these assumptions is that they’re often hardwired into innate reaction or automatic responses that we have to certain things. So it’s not going to be as obvious to identify these so you might be able to identify them by being very introspective but often times you going to have to rely on somebody else. Somebody who works with you on a day-to-day basis or maybe lives with you on a day-to-day basis to start to identify: what are some of these assumptions that you have about yourself that are leading to certain behaviors that you might want to change?
And that is the good news. There are some really concrete and simple ways we can go about changing these assumptions we have about ourselves and more importantly changing the behaviors that are associated with them.
in Friday’s episode I’m actually going to talk about a mechanism or a framework for changing these assumptions and also changing the behaviors associated with them.
